Family Venue Access

Controlled entry for spaces built around children.

Play centres need entrance control designed for environments where children are always close to the gate. Lower cabinets, compact lanes and child-conscious protection help manage busy family arrivals without making the entrance feel institutional.

The Challenges

Family venues combine high visitor peaks with unusually close physical interaction.

01

Parents and children arrive together

A parent rarely approaches the entrance alone. Children, bags and coats all move through the same small area, so the lane must remain easy to understand.

02

Timed sessions create sharp peaks

Birthday parties and timed one- or two-hour sessions can bring whole groups at once. Weekend and holiday demand makes those short arrival windows especially important.

03

Small hands stay close

Children naturally touch nearby surfaces and may put fingers close to moving wings. The gate design therefore needs reinforced anti-pinch protection and controlled movement.

04

Staff are already occupied

Reception staff may be taking payments, answering questions and organising parties at the same time. Entry control should reduce unnecessary manual checking at the gate.

05

Exit needs equal attention

A child should not simply leave the venue unnoticed. The entrance layout and operating process should support controlled movement at both entry and exit.

06

Evacuation overrides normal control

Entrance control must never obstruct an emergency route. Where powered barriers form part of an escape route, EN 17352 requires the way out to remain clear on power loss.

The Response

Use gates that suit the scale and behaviour of family venues.

Keep the gate visually approachable
01

Keep the gate visually approachable

Lower cabinets and softer forms suit spaces designed around children and families. Colour finishes and rounded profiles can sit naturally beside play structures without making the entrance look like a security checkpoint.

Use session-based identification
02

Use session-based identification

QR tickets work well for timed bookings and birthday groups, while RFID wristbands can identify children or visitors during their session. Mobile credentials and NFC can also be used where the operating system supports them.

Control the lane clearly
03

Control the lane clearly

A defined 600 mm passage creates a clear route through the gate rather than around it. Parents and children can approach the same controlled entry point while staff retain oversight of the surrounding area.

Plan entry and exit together

Plan entry and exit together

The gate should be positioned as part of the full reception layout, not as an isolated object. This helps prevent side passage and supports more controlled movement when one group is leaving as another arrives.

Technology

Identification and controlled movement for family venues

Keyable play-centre configurations combine compact powered swing barriers with QR scanning, screens and child-conscious physical design. Depending on the selected model, the entrance can support QR tickets, RFID credentials, NFC or mobile access. Where a powered gate forms part of an escape route, the installation should account for EN 17352 requirements.

  • QR tickets on phone or paper
  • RFID cards and wristbands
  • NFC identification
  • Mobile app credentials
  • Integrated QR scanner and screen
  • Reinforced anti-pinch protection
  • Adjustable powered opening
  • CE-marked entrance-control equipment

Common Questions

Answers, briefly.

What entrance gate is suitable for a children's play centre?

A lower, compact swing barrier designed for family environments is usually the better fit. Models such as KSB1323, KSB1220C and KSB1228C combine a 600 mm passage with forms intended to sit naturally in child-focused interiors.

Can play-centre gates work with QR tickets?

Yes. The KSB1323-Y, KSB1323-W and KSB1323-B include a QR scanner and screen on the cabinet. This suits timed sessions, online bookings and birthday-party arrivals using digital or printed QR tickets.

Can children use RFID wristbands for entry?

Yes. RFID wristbands can be used as an identification method in a play-centre access system. They are particularly practical where each child already receives a wristband for the duration of a session.

What happens to the gates during evacuation?

A powered gate on an escape route must not block evacuation after power loss. EN 17352 requires the way out to remain clear where the barrier forms part of that escape route.
