Ice Rink Access

Entrance control built around public skating sessions.

Ice rink entrances face short, concentrated peaks as each public session begins. Keyable barriers manage wristbands, QR tickets and accessible entry while keeping the route calm for families, groups and regular skaters.

The Challenges

Ice rink entrances must handle concentrated demand in difficult conditions.

01

Session starts create sudden peaks

Most visitors arrive in the minutes before a public session begins. Entrance control must process that short rush without turning the skate-hire area into a queue.

02

Gloves change the interaction

Visitors often arrive wearing gloves and thick winter clothing. Identification therefore needs to remain simple, whether they use an RFID wristband, QR ticket, NFC credential or mobile app.

03

Wet floors are normal

Melted ice, wet footwear and rubber matting are part of everyday rink operation. Entrance equipment sits directly within this working environment rather than in a dry reception lobby.

04

Families need more space

Parents may arrive with children, bags or pushchairs, while some visitors require wheelchair access. A standard lane alone may not suit every person entering the rink.

05

Two groups can meet

One session may be leaving while the next group is already arriving. Entry and exit therefore need to remain understandable when opposite flows happen at almost the same time.

06

Evacuation cannot depend on power

A powered barrier on an escape route must not obstruct evacuation after power loss. EN 17352 requires the way out to remain clear where the barrier forms part of that route.

The Response

Choose the lane around the way the rink actually operates.

Use simple session credentials
01

Use simple session credentials

RFID wristbands work naturally when visitors are already wearing them throughout a skating session. QR codes on a phone or paper ticket provide another straightforward option at the entrance.

Separate standard and wide lanes
02

Separate standard and wide lanes

Standard lanes can handle the main visitor flow, while a wider lane supports wheelchairs, pushchairs and visitors carrying more equipment. The layout remains clear without making every lane unnecessarily wide.

Keep public flow predictable
03

Keep public flow predictable

Swing barriers provide a defined point of entry at the beginning of each session. A visible lane structure also helps separate people entering from those leaving after the previous session.

Plan outdoor rinks differently

Plan outdoor rinks differently

Seasonal outdoor rinks may use SUS304 tripod turnstiles where that form of controlled passage suits the site. Indoor rinks can use stainless-steel swing barriers where a more open architectural treatment is preferred.

Technology

Identification and passage control at the rink entrance

Keyable entrance control can support the credentials commonly used for timed public skating sessions. Swing barriers provide controlled pedestrian lanes, while SUS304 tripod turnstiles are another option for seasonal outdoor rinks. Where a powered barrier is installed on an escape route, the design should account for EN 17352 requirements.

KSB1218 · Swing Barrier

Accessible family lane

The KSB1218 provides a 600–1000 mm passage for wheelchairs and prams. Its SUS304 construction, brushless motor and adjustable 0.9-second opening make it the natural companion to standard lanes at family-focused public rinks.

Common Questions

Answers, briefly.

What is the best entrance barrier for an ice rink?

A stainless-steel swing barrier is a practical choice for many indoor public rinks. The final model depends mainly on required passage width, accessibility and whether the entrance also needs a dedicated wide lane.

Can ice rink gates use RFID wristbands and QR tickets?

Yes. RFID wristbands, RFID cards, QR codes, NFC and mobile app credentials can all be used as identification methods, depending on the chosen access arrangement.

How wide should an accessible ice rink entrance be?

The KSB1218 provides an adjustable 600–1000 mm passage intended to accommodate wheelchairs and prams. It can therefore be used alongside standard lanes rather than making every entrance lane equally wide.

What happens to powered barriers during a power cut?

If a powered pedestrian entrance-control barrier forms part of an escape route, the route must remain clear on power loss in accordance with EN 17352. This requirement should be considered when the rink entrance also forms part of the evacuation route.
