Nowhere else does the entrance carry a licence condition, a revenue line and a crowd safety plan at the same time.

The doors-open window

Ninety per cent of admission happens in the last forty minutes before the event starts. Capacity at the gate is not an average across the evening; it is a peak that either clears or spills back into the street.

One ticket, three phones

A screenshot forwarded twice costs nothing to produce. If the code is only checked when it is sold, the venue discovers the duplicate at the turnstile, in front of a queue, with a supporter who paid someone in good faith.

The wrong sector

Segregation is a safety requirement, not a seating preference. A ticket that opens any gate rather than the correct one moves the problem from the entrance to the stand, where it is far more expensive to solve.

The number on the licence

Licensed capacity is counted per sector, not per venue. Without a live figure at each bank of lanes, admission control becomes a stewards' estimate defended after the fact.

Outside, all year, unattended

Perimeter equipment stands through winter, gets leaned on by crowds and is unsupervised for most of the week. Hardware chosen for a lobby does not last a season on a plaza.

Emptying faster than filling

A venue admits over forty minutes and evacuates in eight. Every barrier that took an hour to meter people in has to disappear entirely, at once, under crowd pressure.

01 — Throughput

Capacity you can multiply

Published throughput is 35 persons per minute per lane, as published by the manufacturer in September 2025. That figure scales linearly, so a ten-lane bank clears roughly 350 people a minute and a doors-open window becomes a calculation rather than a hope.

A tripod meters mechanically: one authorisation indexes the rotor by 120 degrees and admits exactly one person. Under crowd pressure that is a more reliable guarantee than a sensor.

02 — Tickets

Validated at the lane, not at the till

The lane carries a dedicated ticketing controller that accepts a dated single-entry code once and refuses it on every later presentation. A forwarded screenshot opens nothing.

Scanning is published at 0.1 seconds per read from a screen or from paper, and the scanner is a waterproof design — both as published by the manufacturer in September 2025. Paper still matters at a venue, and always will.

03 — Perimeter

Built to stand outside all year

Full height turnstiles are 2300 mm tall with a 650 mm compartment and 90 or 120 degree rotation, in 304 stainless or metal with colour paint. There is no gap above or below the rotor to exploit on a quiet Tuesday.

Tripod variants rated by the manufacturer for indoor and outdoor duty hold the concourse line, in painted cold-rolled or electroplated steel.

04 — Evacuation

Gone, in one signal

On power loss or an alarm the tripod arm drops to vertical and the full height rotor is released to turn freely in the exit direction. Nothing remains at waist height and nothing has to be unlocked by hand.

This is what EN 17352 requires of motorised pedestrian barriers on escape routes, and a venue is where that requirement is examined most closely. Declarations and test documents are supplied for the safety certificate file.

A municipal stadium admitting across two concourse banks and an unstaffed perimeter: twelve tripod lanes with ticket validation at each gate, sector-specific entitlement so a ticket opens the correct bank only, and a live count held per sector against the licensed capacity.

Two full height turnstiles hold the perimeter between event days, and a pair of speed gates serve the hospitality entrance where a queue would be the wrong first impression.

Answers, briefly.

What entrance control do stadiums use?

Tripod turnstiles for bulk entry on the concourse and full height turnstiles on the unstaffed perimeter. Both admit one person per authorisation mechanically rather than by sensor, which is what a ticketed venue needs when several thousand people arrive inside half an hour.

How many people can pass through a turnstile before kick-off?

How are duplicate or resold tickets stopped at the gate?

Can turnstiles keep separate counts for each sector?

Yes. Every barrier is bi-directional, so entries and exits are recorded per lane and grouped per sector. That gives a live figure against a licensed capacity rather than an estimate taken at the end of admission.

What happens to stadium turnstiles in an evacuation?

The rotor is released to turn freely in the exit direction and tripod arms drop clear, leaving the lane unobstructed. EN 17352 requires motorised pedestrian barriers on escape routes to leave the way out clear, and a venue is the setting where that requirement is examined most closely.
