Major metropolitan metro

We will say so before quoting rather than after. Three reasons, each of them decisive on its own.

  • Closed-loop schemes such as Calypso and ITSO, and open-loop bank card payment, are outside the published reader specification
  • Peak metro throughput exceeds what this range is specified for
  • Network homologation and approval regimes are a separate undertaking

The Challenges

What a small station actually contends with.

The problems are not the ones a metro has. They are the ones that come with running a gate line that nobody is standing next to.

Five in the morning

First service leaves before any office opens and last service arrives after everyone has gone home. For most of the operating day the gate line is the only member of staff on the concourse.

Half the passengers have paper

Concessionary passes, tourists, group bookings and flat batteries. Any gate that assumes a smartphone in working order has already failed a significant share of the people it is meant to admit.

The connection drops

A rural station on a leased line loses its link, and the question is whether the gate refuses everyone or admits everyone. Both answers are wrong, and the third answer has to be built rather than hoped for.

Weather, on an open platform

Wind-driven rain, salt near a ferry berth, freezing fog at altitude on a cable car. Equipment rated for a concourse and equipment rated for a platform are not the same equipment.

Two trains, then nothing for an hour

Regional traffic is not a flow, it is a pulse. The gate line has to clear a full train in a few minutes and then stand idle, which is a different design problem from continuous throughput.

Clearing a platform

Evacuation from a platform runs in one direction, at pace, through the concourse. Whatever meters people in has to become completely absent, and the approving authority will ask precisely how.

01 — Validation

Screen or paper, in a tenth of a second

The scanner reads a code from a phone screen or from paper at a published 0.1 seconds per read, in a waterproof housing. Paper is not a legacy case in transport; it is a permanent share of the traffic.

Each lane carries a dedicated ticketing controller supporting MQTT, HTTP, TCP and UDP, driving two scanners and two displays, with pass events, counting, time synchronisation, remote opening and audio messages. All as published by the manufacturer in September 2025.

02 — Unstaffed hours

Decides locally, reconciles later

The controller validates at the lane rather than asking a server for permission on every passenger. When the link drops the gate keeps working from what it holds, buffers the events and reconciles when the connection returns.

That is the third answer to a dropped connection: neither refuse everyone nor admit everyone, but continue correctly and account for it afterwards.

03 — Exposure

Specified for the platform, not the concourse

Several tripod variants are rated by the manufacturer for indoor and outdoor duty, in painted cold-rolled or electroplated steel with an anti-fingerprint treatment. Swing barriers rated for both are available where a wider lane is needed for luggage.

The published operating range is −20 °C to 60 °C. On a mountain lift or an exposed ferry berth, that number is the specification that matters most.

04 — Evacuation

The gate line disappears

On power loss or an alarm the wings withdraw fully into their housings and stay withdrawn, leaving no arm and no wing standing in the route. Tripod arms drop to vertical and full height rotors release to turn freely.

EN 17352 requires exactly this of motorised pedestrian barriers on escape routes. Declarations and test documents are supplied for the approval file.

Four lanes, no ticket office

A regional interchange serving rail and bus: four flap barrier lanes on the concourse, ticket validation at each gate from screen or paper, and local validation so first and last service are covered with the office closed.

Two outdoor-rated tripod turnstiles hold the platform boarding point, and the whole line releases to free passage on an alarm so the platform can clear in one direction without anyone unlocking anything.

What kind of transport sites suit Keyable barriers?

Regional and suburban railway stations, bus and coach terminals, ferry and port terminals, cable cars and funiculars, park-and-ride facilities, heritage railways and staff entrances at depots. These are sites where ticketing is QR-based and volumes are measured in hundreds per peak rather than thousands per minute.

Are these gates suitable for a major metropolitan metro?

Generally no, and we would say so before quoting. Large metro networks run on closed-loop schemes such as Calypso or ITSO, or on open-loop bank card payment, and require throughput and homologation beyond this range. Keyable equipment is specified for QR and NFC ticketing at regional scale.

Can passengers use a paper ticket as well as a phone?

Yes. The scanner reads a code from a screen or from paper at a published 0.1 seconds per read, in a waterproof housing, as published by the manufacturer in September 2025. Paper remains essential for concessionary travel, tourists and flat batteries.
