Keyable speed gates in a daylit corporate lobby

Schools & Universities

Who is on site, right now.

Entrance control for schools, colleges and universities — where the question is not who came in this morning, but who is standing inside the building at this exact minute.

The Challenges

Everything a school owes an answer to.

Education is the one sector where the entrance carries a duty of care rather than only a commercial interest. Six problems come up in every conversation.

01

An adult on site that nobody logged

Safeguarding rests on a simple claim: every adult inside the perimeter is known, expected and accounted for. A signing-in book kept at a desk that is sometimes unattended does not support that claim, and everyone knows it.

02

The visitor badge in a coat pocket

Issued in the morning, never returned, now somewhere in a car. A physical pass that outlives the visit is a credential with no owner, no expiry and no record of where it went.

03

Eight twenty-five

Most of the day's arrivals land inside ten minutes, then it happens again at the end of the day. A gate that hesitates gets propped open by the second week, and a propped gate controls nothing.

04

The register and the fire drill disagree

Attendance is taken in classrooms; evacuation is counted in the playground. When the two lists differ, somebody has to walk back into the building to find out why.

05

Pupils are not office workers

They are shorter, they carry backpacks, they arrive in groups and they run. Equipment specified for a corporate lobby meets none of those conditions, and the sensing that works on an adult in a coat can miss a child at speed.

06

The sports hall at seven in the evening

The building is a school until half past three and a community facility afterwards. Two populations, two sets of rules, one entrance, and usually a set of keys that has been copied more times than anyone can count.

The Response

Four things a school entrance has to get right.

Keyable visitor pass
01 — Safeguarding

A pass that expires by itself

A visitor credential is a QR code valid for a defined window, read at the same lane as staff. Nothing is handed over, so nothing has to be chased at the end of the day, and no unaccounted badge leaves the site.

Contractors, peripatetic teachers, exam invigilators and parents all pass under the same rule, and the record of who was inside is created at the door rather than reconstructed from a book afterwards.

Keyable bell time
02 — Throughput

Ten minutes, no queue

Published throughput is 35 persons per minute for a tripod turnstile and up to 50 per minute for a speed gate lane, as published by the manufacturer. Three lanes clear a two-form-entry arrival comfortably.

Speed is a safeguarding measure here, not a convenience. A gate that queues is a gate somebody props open, and a propped gate controls nothing at all.

Keyable sensing
03 — Safety

Sensing that does not assume an adult

Infrared windows run the full height of each inner face and read presence across the whole opening rather than at a single beam. A smaller person is detected as reliably as an adult, and anti-pinch detection holds the wings open on an obstruction instead of closing on it.

Where a lower profile is wanted, the KSB1322W stands 950 mm tall — the shortest swing barrier in the range, as published by the manufacturer.

Keyable fail-open
04 — Evacuation

Open, and counted

On power loss or an alarm the arms release to free passage and stay there, as EN 17352 requires of motorised pedestrian barriers on escape routes. On the widest variants that leaves an opening of up to 1200 mm — wide enough for a class moving together.

Because every lane counts in both directions, the last figure for who had entered and not left is available to whoever is holding the register at the assembly point.

Included in a Turnkey Delivery

One building, two timetables.

A school is a different institution at nine in the morning and at seven in the evening. The entitlement logic behind the gate is what lets one entrance serve both, and on a turnkey delivery Keyable Europe configures, commissions and supports it.

  • Time-windowed entitlements for pupils, staff and visitors
  • Visitor and contractor passes that expire by themselves
  • Arrival and departure recorded at the point of entry
  • Live on-site figure for the fire register
  • Evening and weekend community bookings on the same lanes
  • Cached entitlements when the network drops

Recommended

Three configurations that suit this sector.

Chosen for what a campus actually faces: a bell-time surge, a lane that a class can move through, and a sports facility that lives a second life after dark.

KSB · Swing Barrier

The main entrance

The widest lane in the range for groups, bags and wheelchairs, with the lowest housing option at 950 mm.

  • Passageup to 1200 mm

KSP · Speed Gate

Universities and colleges

For libraries, faculty buildings and halls of residence, where the population is adult and the volume is constant.

In Place

A secondary school and its sports hall.

Keyable case
Schools & Universities

Three lanes, two timetables

A secondary school with an attached sports hall: three barrier lanes on the main entrance, visitor passes issued as time-bounded QR codes, pupil arrival and departure recorded at the point of entry, and a live on-site figure held for the fire register.

After half past three the same lanes admit booked community groups under a separate time window, so the sports hall earns its evening income without a second entrance and without a single key changing hands.

How We Deliver

Three ways to work with us.

Every model in the range is available as a supply-only order, as an installation integrated with the system you already use, or as a complete working solution. The choice is commercial, not technical — the hardware is identical.

01 — Equipment Supply

Hardware for your own integration

You already have an integrator, an access platform and a programme. We deliver the equipment and the paperwork, and stay out of the way.

  • Barriers, readers and controllers
  • Technical datasheets and dimensioned drawings
  • CE marking and EN 17352 declaration
  • Delivery to site, anywhere in Europe
  • Manufacturer warranty
  • Spare parts held in Europe

02 — Installation & Integration

Integrated with the system you already use

We install, commission and integrate Keyable barriers and turnstiles with virtually any professional access-control platform capable of exchanging the required commands and credentials. You keep your software; only the entrance changes.

  • Everything in supply, plus:
  • Site survey
  • Installation and mechanical fixing
  • Commissioning
  • Integration with your existing access-control platform
  • Staff handover and documentation
Discuss an installation →
03 — Full-Service Solution

Everything, as one contract

One point of responsibility from site survey and commissioning through long-term local service support. You approve a design and take delivery of a working entrance.

  • Everything in installation, plus:
  • Software: entitlements, ticketing, attendance, occupancy
  • QR, NFC and RFID identification
  • Scheduled maintenance and online support
  • Local after-sales service
  • Extended warranty on the installed system

All three models cover the full range: speed gates, swing, flap and sliding barriers, tripod, full height and half height turnstiles. Scope, response times and warranty terms are set per project and confirmed in the quotation.

Common Questions

Answers, briefly.

Why do schools need entrance control at the gate?

Because a school has to be able to say who is on site at any moment. That single fact underpins safeguarding, the fire register and attendance. A controlled entrance produces the answer as a by-product of people arriving, rather than as a clipboard exercise.

How should a school manage visitors and contractors?

With a pass that expires by itself. A visitor credential is a QR code valid for a defined window, read at the same lane as staff. Nothing is handed over, so nothing has to be recovered, and no unaccounted pass leaves the site in a coat pocket.

Can entrance barriers produce a fire register?

In part. Every Keyable barrier is bi-directional, so entries and exits are both recorded and the difference is a live figure for who is still on site. On an alarm the barriers release to free passage, as EN 17352 requires on escape routes, and the last recorded count supports the register at the assembly point.

Are entrance barriers safe around children?

Safety comes from three things: infrared sensing across the full height of the lane rather than a single beam, so a small person is detected as reliably as an adult; anti-pinch detection that holds the wings open rather than closing on an obstruction; and free passage on power loss. Lower housings are available, with the KSB1322W at 950 mm the shortest swing barrier in the range.

Can the same gates control evening community use of school facilities?

Yes. Entitlements are held against time windows, so the same lane can admit pupils during the school day and a booked sports club in the evening, without a second entrance and without keys changing hands.
